In a work subtitled ``The Oregon Trail Diary of Hattie Campbell,'' Gregory (Earthquake at Dawn, 1992, etc.) reconvenes the Dear America series in 1847, as Hattie, her parents, and her two younger brothers begin the long trek from Missouri to Oregon by wagon train. While the plot is not riveting, young girls will enjoy Hatties journey and elementary grade social studies classes studying the Oregon Trail will learn about life on the Trail.– Tricia Melgaard, Centennial Middle School, Broken Arrow, OKĬopyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. The narration is well done, and Hatties youthful voice shines through. Black-and-white photos, a recipe for Johnny Cake, and maps of the route can be found at the end of the book. Many in the wagon train arrive in Oregon City on foot with only a few precious possessions. Hattie reflects upon the slowly changing scenery, the curiously friendly Indians they meet, and the devastating toll the long journey takes. Their wagons are full and their hearts are hopeful. Teaming up with dozens of other families, the wagon train begins its six-month journey across the prairies and mountains of the West. She is given a journal for her birthday and told to record both the bad and the good, Hattie. Grade 3-7–Hattie Campbell is 13 years old in 1847 when her parents decide to sell their farm in Missouri and make their way across the Oregon Trail to Oregon City for a fresh start after the death of Hatties sisters in this title by Kristiana Gregory (Scholastic, 1997). Crazy rich asians series5/28/2023 It features two leads who are new to movies: Wu, an actor most recognizable for her role on the ABC series Fresh Off the Boat, and Henry Golding, a virtual unknown who last worked as a travel host for the BBC. It’s an earnest romantic comedy in a sea of action and superhero films. It’s the first modern story with an all-Asian cast and an Asian-American lead in 25 years the last, The Joy Luck Club, was in 1993. To many in Hollywood, Crazy Rich Asians might look like a risky bet. As Rachel, a professor of economics and game theory at New York University, tells her students, “The key is playing to win, instead of trying not to lose.” He folds, only to be crushed when she reveals her cards. Her hand is much weaker than her opponent’s-he’s got two pairs-but she fearlessly bluffs and puts in all her chips. There’s a scene in Crazy Rich Asians in which Rachel Chu, the lead character played by Constance Wu, is in a game of poker. Sometimes he and Mom would huddle in the kitchen. And no one was going to fault anybody for avoiding that. Towards the end, Allen who was the kindest man ever became ‘that’ person who would yell ‘kants’ in a weird New England accent at people who tried to help him. He remembers the time when his stepdad Allen became sick. Eber is at a stage where the tumor is affecting his word choices, so he is considering killing himself before his faculties fail him and he becomes a burden to his family. But then the story moved to Don Eber, a man in his fifties who is suffering from a brain tumor, and all of a sudden the story turned into terrific read! George Saunders’ portrayal of Eber is brilliant. This first bit was very slow moving for me, perhaps because fantasy isn’t a genre I like. On the day the story takes place, Robin is on a mission to save Suzanne from homeroom who has been kidnapped by “Netherlanders.” So his fantasies, in which he is a hero, has become key to his survival. It starts with Robin, a little boy who is constantly bullied at school. I struggled a lot with this story at first. Miraculously, throughout this ordeal, the expedition's photographer, Frank Hurley, protected his negatives and photographs from destruction. Shackleton then travelled another 850 miles in an open boat across the stormiest ocean in the world to reach help. When the ship eventually sank they were forced to escape by lifeboat. Twelve hundred miles away from land, drifting on ice packs, Shackleton and his men survived the next five months on a diet of dogs, penguins and seals. In October 1915, still half a continent away from their objective, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. In August 1914 the Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. Shackleton's mission failed, but the resulting adventure became one of the most celebrated accounts of man's survival against unbelievable odds. 'A superb account of the greatest survival story of our time' - Chris Bonington The story of Ernest Shackleton's epic journey to cross the Antarctic overland has now been turned into four hours of gripping television with Kenneth Branagh playing Shackleton. Tricia levenseller books5/27/2023 More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. “Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map-the key to a legendary treasure trove-seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship. I was also very curious to see how a female protagonist would behave in the hyper-masculine setting of a pirate ship. The fact that it was a pirate-themed book made it even more appealing since I recently watched Pirates of the Caribbean and it’s put me in the mood to indulge in similar swashbuckling adventure stories. I was looking for something fun and fast to read and a young adult novel seemed to fit the bill. Of course, like many of my reads this year, I came across this book as a free offering as part of the Kindle Unlimited subscription service. I had great fun reading this novel so I’m excited to share it with you today! It is the first installment in a two-part duology. Ahoy, mateys! Today I’ll be reviewing a young adult pirate adventure novel, Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller. AuthorWrite something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview. Archives
